Since our Casita part won’t be in until Friday we decided to move about 15 miles down the road to a little town called Northwood. It is between Chichester and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is supposed to rain all day and again tomorrow so we thought we would ride into Portsmouth and go brewpub hopping. The first one we stopped at was Portsmouth Brewing. Jim ordered the sampler of 10 beers. We talked to some people from New York. Then we tried to go to Portsmouth Brewing’s sister brewery called Smuttynose but it was only open Friday and Saturday for tours and tasting. We had a couple of theirs in the sampler from Portsmouth Brewing.
We walked around the historic downtown area. Jim then drove us to Red Hook Brewing. We have been to two of their other locations in Seattle and Walnut Creek, California. We went to the Walnut Creek location with Lorna and David Neill a few years ago. This is a really big operation. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the brewing process – he was quite entertaining. The tour cost $1.00 and you get samples of beer and a free glass. We didn’t pay anything because we had coupons from a visitors map.
There was one more brewery not too far away just inside Maine in the town of Kittery. This one was called Shipyard Brewing. We ordered a snack and a beer at the bar and Jim immediately noticed the distinctive accents of the Maine patrons. We talked to them awhile. When they find out we are from Texas they all want to know what we are doing up here. We went back to the Casita and I fixed dinner. It didn’t get above 58 degrees today.
