It rained all night but had stopped by the time we got up and was cloudy. We drove the length of Cape Cod today and it turned out to be beautiful and sunny. We stopped at Fort Hill and the Penniman House. Penniman was a ship captain who made all his money in whale oil.

Next came the Marconi site. This was the site of the 1st transatlantic radio tower signal in December 1901. It was the letter “S’”. On January 18 1903, Marconi (inventor of the radio) sent a 48 word message from Cape Cod to England. It was the first wireless message and was from President Roosevelt to King Edward. This marked the inception of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA).

We drove down Ocean View Drive and stopped at Highlands Center. This was a radar facility for the government. It had a church, housing for families, NCO club, movie theater, ball field, etc. Then we went next door to the Highland Lighthouse, better known as Cape Cod Light.
At the end of the cape is the Province Lands visitor center. We made a quick stop and continued on. At Race Point Beach we saw the 1898 Old Harbor Life Saving station. This was for aiding wrecked ships. It is the last of 13 that were along the cape. We could see Race Point Lighthouse and Wood End Lighthouse from the road but could not get close to them. We turned around and drove back to camp and then went to the only underground VFW Hall. Their motto is, “ Hunker in the Bunker”.
