It was 39 degrees when we got up this morning and clear. We thought we would go for a hike today but, there were so many people that all of the parking was taken up at the trail heads. We drove to Clarks Trading Post in North Woodstock and looked at a covered bridge that is used for a train to cross a creek. It was built in 1904 but moved to this spot in 1965. We drove back through the Franconia Notch State Park and Jim walked to a little waterfall called the Basin.
Jim decided we would go ahead and drive today to the top of Mount Washington. This is an 8 mile road to the 6,288 feet summit. This is the highest mountain in the northeastern US. It was a harrowing drive with scary drop offs and lots of curves. You have to use your lowest gear going both up and down. It had snowed and sleeted up on the summit yesterday which made the scenery beautiful. The summit was 27 degrees and the wind up there was 20 mph. Normally the wind is much stronger. On April 12, 1934 the highest wind ever recorded by man was 231 mph at this summit.

We descended and drove to North Conway to a brewpub, had a beer sampler and watched the first half of the UT/UCLA game. We listened to the last half in the truck and drove back to Lincoln via the Kancamangus Highway. In the town of Conway just before getting on the Kancamangus, we stopped at another bridge over the Saco River. This covered bridge was built in 1890. Once back in Lincoln, we went to the American Legion and bought a chicken dinner they were serving tonight.
