We left Pownal and drove through Portland to Saco, Maine. It didn’t rain today but it was cloudy for the most part. We got a campsite at Silver Spring Campground in Saco. We drove back to Portland and went to some breweries.
The first one was Allagash Brewing, a Belgian style micro brewery. They were brewing a beer using grapes that the employees harvested yesterday. One of the brewers had me dip my finger in the mashed up grapes and taste them. One of their beers is aged in bourbon oak barrels and was soooo good! We went a couple of blocks down to Maine Brewery but it was closed today. Next door to it was Rising Tide Brewery and they weren’t brewing today but he let us look around. They brew small 15 gallon batch beers. A couple of blocks in the other direction was D.L. Geary Brewing. They weren’t having tours today either but the receptionist called the brewer and he gave us a private tour. He poured us samples directly out of the bright tanks. Jim was really impressed with the taste of these beers. They brew English ales in open fermenters. Jim bought some of their beers to take back to the Casita with us. The brewer gave us some stickers, magnets and a couple of bottle openers.
We also went to Sebago Brewing and to Shipyard Brewing. Then we drove back to Saco and stopped at Run of the Mill Public House brewery and talked to some locals who gave us really good tips on eating in Portland. This brewery is owned by the same people who own the Liberal Cup that we stopped at a couples of days ago. Jim had some cheese soup made with their IPA and I had some clam chowder.
We went back to the Casita and I heated up leftovers for supper. Maine has a program with the breweries, if you visit 5 of them you get a free cap, 10 you get a free t-shirt and all of them you get a special package. We have visited 13 of the 25 so far. We will only visit one more in Maine. Vermont had the same deal and we visited enough of them to get a t-shirt also.
